The Dimensions of Practivity -pt. 2

The dimensions of proactivity are interrelated.  They work in conjucntion with each other.  They are like a three-cord rope.  They reinforce one another.  Covey puts a lot of emphasis on the response dimension.  To illustrate what he says about it, imagine a pool table.  The pool stick hits the ball which in turn hits other balls.  A good pool player knows exactly how to hit the ball, because he knows how the ball will react.  However, if the ball had a concience, it would be able to decide to go where and how the pool player wants it to go, whether to go in a different direction and speed, or not go at all.  Covey says that we all have a gap between stimulus and response.  In this gap we decide whether to react to the stimulus or to respond in a the way of our choosing.  We are thus potentially unlike the pool ball - proactive.  However, if we do not make use of that capacity to respond, we merely react to stimulus, we are very much as the pool ball - reactive.

Covey says that we - humans are given four endowed that enable us to be free to choose.  We will look at hose next time.
